The official end of Smallville will hit the small screen on the CW Network this Friday. After 10 long years fans of the series will finally get to watch Clark Kent make his long awaited transition from farm boy/reporter to Superman ?tights and all! Saying goodbye to the show that spent a decade telling the tale of Superman?s beginnings will be hard, but to celebrate Smallville?s series end check out our Top 10 Best Moments and Milestones of the show. Plus watch some awesome fan made videos from around the globe.
It was back in 2001 when creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough first aired their pilot episode of Smallville on the WB Network. Originally placed in a Tuesday night time slot, the show made its debut to mix reviews. Easy to predict considering what a huge undertaking this would be. After all Superman is the king of the superheroes and over the course of history has been handled delicately since its inception back in 1933 when writer Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster first introduced the Man of Steel as a hero, rather than the role of a villain they previously penned him in.
But it wasn?t until Miles and Gough decided to take the plunge and risk criticism for tinkering with the man and the myth, showcasing the kryptonian (played by Tom Welling) in his younger years with vulnerabilities to more than just kryptonite. Over the course of history the fictional characters adolescence has always been talked about, but never fleshed out to this degree with additional characters and some changes to the mythology to boot!
On a weekly basis the series entered our televisions with the villain of the week formula, season long story arcs with smaller developments in between, a mix of super hero appearances (star girl, super girl, aqua man, Cyborg, booster gold and more), teenage angst, death, murder, dismay, and more. And as much as the writers on the series tweaked and manipulated the comic book storyline (the intro and the death of Jimmy Olsen, the introduction of Chloe Sullivan) somehow they managed to bring the mythology full circle, restoring history piece by piece along the way, ultimately leaving the future of Superman the same by series end.
A few things did remain the same however throughout the run of the show- Clark?s unwavering ability to avoid violent ends with his enemies no matter what, Lex and Clark?s strong relationship for good or bad, Martha and Jonathan?s love, and Lois and Clark?s strong bond.
On to the Top 10 moments and milestones of Smallville?..
Pete Ross leaves Smallville In one of the saddest moments of the series we see Clark lose his best friend and the only keeper of his secret outside of Ma and Pa Kent. Leaving to move away to Wichita with his mother, Pete narrowly avoids death in the episode entitled Forsaken when Lex Luthor comes to his aid.
Appreciative, Pete warns Clark in their final scene together that his future enemy is already looking for answers and won?t stop until he gets them. And although Pete?s departure marks the loss of an original cast member, it also opens the door for Chloe who eventually becomes Watchtower, one of the superhero?s best defenses.
Tom Welling and Christopher Reeves Meet as Clark and Dr. Virgil Swan! Strange and exciting, Clark Kent travels to New York, in the episode Rosetta, to meet Dr. Virgil Swan, played by Superman Christopher Reeves. The scene was a fan favorite and drew some hefty ratings. Watching the two speak about Clark?s heritage and what it all means definitely made Smallville history!
The death of Jonathan Kent Easily rocking Smallville at its core, the death of Jonathan Kent (played by Jon Schneider) left a massive hole in the long running show but would be the biggest trigger point for a shift in the storyline. Leaving those famous father, son heart to heart talks behind, Smallville slowly revamped into a darker series and dialed in on Clark?s destiny as Superman. A heavy price to pay in order to move things along no matter how much Schneider would be missed!
Chloe Tells Clark She Knows His Secret! It took five years before viewers of the show finally got to see Clark?s sidekick confess that she has known his secret for quite sometime. Taking place in the first episode of season 5 Chloe, shaking and cold in the Fortress of Solitude, asks Clark to speed her away before telling him she has been waiting for him to trust her and that his secret is safe. This one was long overdue after watching Chloe slip up episode after episode about how Clark is different, faster and skilled!
Clark tells him Jimmy Olsen the truth! I say the ?death of Jimmy Olsen? but fans of the show know that in a surprise twist we find out that character is actually not the dorky reporter that is famously seen with Lois and Clark throughout history. In the land of Smallville he?s actually the older brother of the real Jimmy Olsen, but none the less after becoming invested in his character, who was Chloe?s first love, actor Aaron Ashmore departure from the series was unforgettable.
Not only did show runners kill off a major player in comic book land (or so we thought), but finally let us see Jimmy?s reaction, before his death, as he discovers that his suspicions were right all along. The awesome scene featured Jimmy pulling a kryptonite arrow out of Clark?s back as he watches the cut on CK?s face heal! His eyes alone showed us in seconds that he understood everything, including Chloe?s overbearing protectiveness towards her best friend.
Clark and the Justice League Team Up! There?s no denying this was one of the best moments in Smallville! After discovering Luthor Corp?s testing with the meteor infected, Clark joins forces with Oliver Queen for the first time and what would later be called the Justice League. In a scene of fire and explosions Clark, Green Arrow, Cyborg, Aquaman, and Bart swoop in saving the day and shutting down part of the 33.1 project.
Lana and the Kryptonite Suit The back and forth love affair between Clark and Lana finally came to a halt after seven long years. Ultimately ending their future together, Lana and Clark are forced to say goodbye after they discover that Lex?s ultimate suit (the one Lana ends up wearing) absorbs kryptonite, making it impossible for her to go near Clark. What a way to go. And in the final scenes they share on screen, Clark attempts to kiss Lana goodbye before falling to his knees.
After being thrown out of a building by his own son only Lionel Luthor would find a way back! As soon as I saw Lionel Luthor step back onto the screen of Smallville, and into the streets of a rainy and dismal Metropolis, I knew all hell was ready to break loose in Clark?s world. Except this isn?t the old Lionel, the former emissary of Jor-Eli?s, he?s from an alternate world and ready to wreak havoc! Seeing John Glover back from the dead was awesome! He was made to play the villain and always brings nothing but the best to is role as Lex?s angry and cold father.
Lex Luthor?s Return To Smallville! Yes, we?re jumping ahead with this one but we already know Michael Rosenbaum?s return to Smallville, bald cap and all, will easily be one of the greatest moments of the show!
Physically absent since season 7, but still a looming threat in the background, we can?t wait to see Clark and Lex come to face to face. And although Lex?s evil role in Smallville has faded, Clark will be back on high terror alert when their relationship as enemies moves back to the forefront. It should be interesting to see the experienced and more mature Clark play out one last scene with Lex. Which brings us to the next biggest scene of Smallville milestones?
Clark taking flight! We knew this moment would come but we didn?t know when. Finally here, Clark?s flight scene is sure to wrap the series end up into a neat little package with a bow! Will he be donning the famous suit? And how about those tights? Will they finally put together those two famous words ?SUPER MAN ? after teasing us for years?! We?ll have to wait and see. But no matter what happens Smallville has given us ten long years of fun, dark, intriguing and emotional entertainment. So we say farewell to the cast and crew of a great show!
It?s been great Smallville!
